Community Hydro

Small-scale hydropower can provide safe and reliable 'mains type' electricity in rural areas where grid power does not exist. With careful load management, many houses can be successfully connected to a small generator. In countries where kerosene lanterns are used, these can be replaced with modern, energy-efficient lamps. Mini distribution systems enable communities to operate independently from the grid, taking ownership of their natural resources and reducing dependency on fossil fuels and batteries.

We work with UK and target country partners to implement catalyst projects and capacity building programs in regions where untapped potential for pico hydro exists.

Our pico hydro projects in Kenya have received particular acclaim since they won the Ashden Awards 'Overseas Project for Light' in 2004. The local partner for this project was ITDG-East Africa (now Practical Action).

Our UK partners include Sustainable Control Systems Ltd and Dr Arthur Williams at the University of Nottingham. For more information about the concept 'pico hydro' visit www.picohydro.org.uk
